Every once in a while the author includes his opinions on Buddhism and spiritual practices, which is actually very interesting. Throughout the book Polly studies the ways of the Buddhist Monks, and learns the legendary ways of kungfu, martial arts, and meditation. Polly meets Deqing, who in time would become Polly’s mentor in the martial arts. Upon his arrival, Polly discovers that the Temple was burned to the ground in World War II by the Japanese, and was reduced to a tourist attraction where the Buddhist monks would practice their kungfu for tourists, in return for food and shelter in the newly constructed schools there. American Shaolin is the autobiography of ninety-eight pound weakling, Matthew Polly.ĭuring 1992-93, Polly dropped out of Princeton University to fulfill his dream of being the baddest fighter in the world by traveling to the Shaolin Temple, a monastery in China.
